NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR COOPERATION

1. The IAEA expert mission

The National University Alliance for Nuclear Energy (ANUEN) will take part in the level 1 Expert Mission, organized by the IAEA, through the National Integrated Nuclear Education Advisory Service (INEAS), which will take place in the fall of this year, in Romania.

In a first phase, the twelve founding universities, together with the two associated universities, will complete the questionnaire sent by the IAEA, which will form the basis of the country report. The answers received will be compiled and sent to the Agency, after which the actual visit will be organized. Within this, ANUEN members propose to organize meetings with the IAEA representatives, to discuss: human resource needs, skills required in the field and future collaborative actions.

 2.  FIRST/NEXT Academic Partnership with ANUEN and Texas A&M University

This activity is part of a new initiative called Nuclear Expediting the Energy Transition (NEXT) One Stop Shop, a subprogram under the U.S. Department of State’s existing Foundational Infrastructure for the Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology (FIRST) Program which Romania joined in 2021.

The goal of this Academic Partnership is to provide support by the Department of Nuclear Engineering at Texas A&M University in building curriculum across the institutions in the NUA. A focus with be on small modular reactors. This will be accomplished through a series of virtual interactions covering various components of the nuclear curriculum and how the information can be incorporated into academic courses. In addition, the content can be included in other disciplines that are also important to support a nuclear power program. CRDF Global will provide coordination and logistics support to assist with the academic partnership implementation.

3. Romanian-Canadian cooperation

The National University Alliance for Nuclear Energy (ANUEN) has started discussions with the University Network of Excellence in Nuclear Engineering (UNENE - Canada), regarding the start of collaborations in the energy field. The partnership is intended to have an academic character, with the the following objectives: contribution to the development of a multidimensional study program, with national and international representativeness, in direct correlation with the socio-economic needs that pursue sustainable development, the reduction to zero carbon emissions, by promoting nuclear energy as the primary source of energy; contributing to education for nuclear energy as an integral part of sustainable development; increasing the national integration of human resource training for the field of nuclear energy; promoting and coordinating advocacy, representation and international partnership actions in the interest of the sustainable development of nuclear energy.
